Background of the study:
Oil exploration activities have long been recognized for their transformative effects on regional economies; however, they also present considerable challenges for traditional livelihoods. In Warri South Local Government Area, Delta State, artisanal fishing communities have experienced significant socio-economic disruptions due to extensive oil exploration. While oil activities contribute to national revenues and infrastructural development, they have adversely impacted marine ecosystems and fish stocks, which are vital for the sustenance of local fishermen (Afolabi, 2023). Environmental degradation, water pollution, and resource depletion have compromised the viability of artisanal fishing, forcing communities to seek alternative livelihoods (Bassey, 2024). Moreover, conflicts between oil companies and local stakeholders have heightened tensions and increased economic insecurity among the affected populations (Okon, 2025). This study critically examines the interplay between oil exploration and artisanal fishing livelihoods, exploring the socio-economic costs borne by fishing communities. It also evaluates the extent to which environmental management policies and corporate social responsibility initiatives mitigate adverse impacts (Afolabi, 2023).
Statement of the problem:
Artisanal fishing communities in Warri South face declining fish yields and environmental degradation due to aggressive oil exploration practices. These adverse effects compromise traditional livelihoods and heighten socio-economic vulnerabilities, necessitating an investigation into the sustainability of fishing activities amid industrial expansion (Bassey, 2024).

Significance of the study:
This study is significant for its focus on the critical balance between industrial development and traditional livelihoods, offering insights for policymakers, environmental agencies, and community leaders to devise strategies that protect artisanal fishing amid oil exploration pressures (Udo, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is confined to examining the impacts of oil exploration on artisanal fishing livelihoods in Warri South Local Government Area. It does not address broader industrial activities or impacts in other regions. Data limitations and environmental variability may affect generalizability.
